In July 2009 Neal came and reported a story on us having a bake sale in front of Nova Mae's Cafe in downtown Bennington. The article on the front page of the banner was celebrating the summer collaborations of DREAM, Nova Mae's, and Blooming Chefs, as well as informing Bennington about DREAM itself and the year-round work of Bennington College mentors.

Blooming Chefs is a multi-faceted ecoliteracy program for children, teens, their families and the community involving environmental stewardship through gardening, culinary arts, creative writing and visual arts. We began working with this non-profit out of Bennington in summer '09, through Dana Wolfson (mentor) who volunteered for both Blooming Chefs and DREAM. Dana came each Wednesday of the summer and took Willowbrook kids to all of the local Blooming Chefs gardens (predominantly the main one at Mt. Anthony Middle School), where they watered, harvested, and learned about the plants growing there, as well as getting the chance to cook healthy snacks from the vegetables with Dana. In addition, Blooming Chefs donated fresh produce from the gardens weekly, which were used in baking fundraiser workshops and Friday Dinner Nights. We anticipate continuing to work and collaborate with Blooming Chefs into the school year, having a venue to continue selling baked goods at for fundraising, as well partnering with Blooming Chefs for future usage of a kitchen in the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington.
Carol would also like to continue working with us for future planting and tending of the gardens, as well as continued donation of produce to teach mentees about growing, cooking, and eating locally grown vegetables.
